Drawing Statement

Drawing

For my drawing project I have decided to look into the Surrealist technique automatism. I started out using thread as a medium, and then looking closely at the thread drawings and trying to find objects and figures within them.
I started looked at Andre Masson, who was the first to look into automatic drawing. He influenced a lot of other artists to then try the technique, where they did not want to control their drawing and so often would starve themselves of food and or sleep.
I wanted to use a medium which would allow my style to be looser, so I used gloss paint, which is oil based and so it comes out almost stringy. Again trying to find things within the paintings.
I looked into Jackson Pollock's drip paintings as although this was not exactly what I wanted to go into, his technique of not really thinking about what he was painting and just throwing paint on the canvas what I wanted to incorporate.
As well as my paintings I wanted to try and transfer my thread drawings into sculptures, almost as three dimensional drawings. I started out again using thread and wool, to show off thick and thin lines. I then went on to use rope and string.
I looked into Eva Hesse when I started thinking of sculpture, and I feel that in a way she created automatic drawings using sculpture. I feel that her rope and latex piece looked really effective and I wanted to look into this, but somehow look deeper into the sculpture to find objects and figures.
I liked the idea of having no control over what I am creating, and then looking within these drawings and actually finding things within them, yet I did not have any intention of putting them there.
